Historic Sebring Sprite 1960

The original ‘berlinetta’ fastback lightweight Sebring Sprite reg  RTL 304 Featured in John Sprinzel’s book ‘Spritely Years’. See http://www.sebringsprite.com/rtl304.html

and http://www.sebringsprite.com/latestnews.html

The bodywork, with a more attractive lower height windscreen and side windows than other Sebrings, was designed by the late owner/driver Adrian Andrew and built by Alec and Fred of Peels of Kingston, with a Williams and Pritchard bonnet.

“Once, timed at Monza at 131mph, with a good deal of help from a GTO. Broke all 3 engines at Le Mans. Healey Motor Co. wouldn’t lend us one of theirs as we (Chris Irwin and I) were nearly 20 seconds faster than their car. So spent the next few days enjoying the birds and the booze!”

Adrian competed in over 300 races in the 60s: Nürburgring; Enna; Zolder; Zeltweg; Montlhéry; Monza; Sebring; Norisring; Little Rock; Zandvoort, Le Mans; Targa Florio - plus the usual UK circuits.

Following Adrian’s ownership it passed through a handful of owners including John Hugenholz and Peter Ecury, and was raced up to 1984.
There is a large history file with supporting letters, photographs and Invoices.
And a complete list of all previous owners. (Current owner from 1988
)

In 1986 it returned from Holland to the UK when it was sympathetically (partially) restored by Brown & Gammons between 1986/7, with engine by Oselli - copious engine build specifications. In 1998 Gerry Brown of Merton Motorsport completed further detail work including a cold air duct to the footwell, under-bonnet wiring and a new period master cylinder from Holland.

Engine is 1380cc, 10:1 compression, MD286 scatter cam, 1.5:1 roller rockers and vernier gears.
Period bucket seats. Original roll bar. Fire extinguisher. 14x5.5 inch 72 spoke competition wire wheels with drilled out knock-ons. Original rear Armstrong adjustable lever-arm dampers. Original large Enots filler cap.
All-black period dashboard gauges by Jaeger/Smiths. Fly-off handbrake, close-ratio straight-cut gearbox. 7.5 inch clutch conversion, competition distributor, LCB exhaust with single rear box, Weber 45 on period inlet manifold. Smaller Jaguar side lights (in keeping with scale of car) contain amber indicator filament. Bobywork in Gunmetal grey with red leather seats and red carpet. Brake servo fitted for easier road driving.

Just back from rolling road, so it's in tip-top running order. Much sweeter and easier to drive, even with a lumpy scatter cam! 126 bhp @6,500 rpm - “probably more to come at higher revs, but we held it there!”

An historic car with race history - and the original fastback.
Competed in over 300 races in the 60s in Europe, UK and USA.

Offered for sale to support lack of pension!
